Session Descriptions
Participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as they want. All you need to do is register! Below are the dates, times, and descriptions of each of the sessions.
Saturday, February 20
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM - Introductions and Welcome to Guatemala
Join us for a chance to meet other participants and the staff of HSP! We will use this time to introduce you to our work and mission, as well as provide general background about Guatemala and its Indigenous populations.
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM - Cooking Class with Guadalupe
Learn traditional Guatemalan recipes from HSP founder and cookbook author Guadalupe Ramirez! She will be sharing traditional recipes as well as insights into her Indigenous culture and Guatemalan background. Learn how to make homemade tortillas, chuchitos, and traditional black beans from your very own kitchen! A list of ingredients for you to follow along at home will be provided closer to the event date.
3:00 PM - 4: 30 PM - Activating in your Own Community with Ben Blevins
Join HSP’s founder Ben Blevins in unpacking the difference between sympathizing and activating, the challenges of international volunteering, and how to be active in your own community. Using a combination of his lived experiences with Highland Support Project and research through his Master’s in Social Justice and Community Organizing, Ben will provide a well-rounded perspective on this timely topic.
Sunday, February 21
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Weaving Demonstration with Paola (an indigenous Mayan Ki'che)
Join Paola, one of our master weavers and community organizers in Guatemala, for an interactive weaving demonstration. You will not just see the skill it takes to create beautiful traditional Indigenous weaving, but also dive deeper into the cultural history and significance of the practice.
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Meet with a Mayan Family
Use this hour to travel to Guatemala! We will be “visiting” a family’s home to hear firsthand the impact a new clean-burning stove has had on their lives. Along with seeing their home and meeting family members, we will hear more from the HSP staff about the significance and strategy of our clean-burning stove program.
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Mayan Spirituality with Don Audelino
Don Audelino Sac Coycoy is a Maya-K’iche’ political scientist and Mayan priest. He is an expert in Mayan culture, politics, and cosmovision and has also served as a representative of the Indigenous council of elders during the Guatemalan Peace Accords. He will be joining us from Guatemala to speak on the spirituality of Mayan culture and its interconnectedness to other faith practices.
